Teaching Machines Intimacy

Amber is a Creative Technologist and New Media Artist based in Glasgow, and she explores the artistic potential of technology as a creative medium through the convergence of art, design, and computational practice. Data is one of the driving forces behind her work, within her practice she aims to poetically visualise data and use it to communicate to viewers a wider narrative.

Teaching Machines Intimacy spanned from 2020-2021 taking place in isolation during the pandemic. It is a speculative exploration into the shared intimacy between humans and machines in the 21st Century which uses textiles as a vehicle for touch-based interaction. By exploring robotics, machine learning, and creative coding methods in the context of visual expression Amber sought to find insight into digital intimacy and touch during a time when most human interaction was done remotely through computers and where there was little in the way of physical proximity between humans.

The themes within this body of work are linked to the new way we have become accustomed to living under the digital era and the new ways in which we use technology to show our affection for one another.
