Sara Robinson (She/Her)

I am a multidisciplinary illustrator from the west of Scotland. Switching between 2D and 3D mediums my practice is experimental, fast moving, usually involves some collage and I’m always looking for new processes to learn. Throughout all my work I am particularly drawn to narrative, location, patterns and mark making. For me this year has involved animation, book illustration, film poster design, and far too much time spent in an old shed.

Norrie: The Memory of a Man and his Shed

Full Final Film

‘Norrie’ explores the relationship between my downstairs neighbour and the shed in our shared garden. Developed from a story that happened over lock-down; finding another shed built inside our garden shed, the film combines live footage, stop motion, hand drawn animations and collage with a variety of editing techniques to reflect the unreliability and crafted nature of the memory-based narratives.

Drawing and Mark Making

Work from projects across the year. Drawing and mark making always find a place in my process and are an important part of how I play around with ideas.

The Birds and Other Stories

Creating illustrations and redesigning the cover of ‘The Birds and other Stories’ by Daphne du Maurier. I focused on reflecting du Maurier’s use of natural settings and strong sense of atmosphere. Illustrations were made using a graphite, ink and physical collage to give a hand cut influence.

Film Posters

Illustrating a series of A1 two-colour film posters for the Jules Dassin films, ‘Thieves’ Highway’ 1949  ‘Night and the City’ 1950 and ‘Rififi’ 1955. Dassin’s black and white thrillers are harsh, fast-paced and always use a high level of contrast. I experimented with hand lettering all the film titles for each poster and managed to screen print several copies of my poster for ‘Rififi’.
