Widening Participation Award for Fine Art, Royal Scottish Academy New Contemporaries: Selected Artist
Working across a range of media, my practice is built around making the everyday world around us appear strange. By combining dystopian and utopian qualities in challenging ways, I reveal unsettlement lurking within deceivingly normal settings.
The peculiar uncertainty of what one is viewing is enhanced by how I merge digital printed media with oil paint, producing scenarios that are part reality and part painterly. There is a sense of violence in the process of my work which underpins its playscape setting. My methods involve tearing apart and reattaching physical dissections of the canvas, defacing printed imagery using paint and segmenting the picture plane with an electric horizon line. I work predominantly on a large scale, confronting the viewer and giving them the chance to be immersed in the painted environment before them.
By focusing attention onto the often overlooked, I reveal the oddity of our surroundings and how we live in them, sometimes simply exhibiting the weirdness that already exists around us. My work aims to offer launch points toward new and interesting thoughts about the spaces which we inhabit, and our impact on the planet.
