Rebecca Mcsherry (she/her)

Rebecca McSherry is a new-media artist and designer with an interest in film, particularly science-fiction.  Her work focusses on popular media depictions of subjective experiences and how we perceive the realities within these experiences. She takes on board the concepts of voyage, space and otherness from these films and uses them to fuel her work in interactive and digital media.

ENDLESS EXPANSES

A 3D experience of iconic science fiction corridors exploring the themes and concepts within these spaces. Associating the journey of these expanses and shifting our perceptions of reality.
Dealing with the idea of passage and travel between these realities, these corridors act as a portal – an in-between space symbolising connection.

Our vision of inhabiting these dimensions takes us on a journey between physical reality and fictional reality.

This work pays homage to these imagined environments depicted in contemporary pop culture.

Created with Processing, After Effects and Unity 3D

ENDLESS EXPANSES

INTERLINKED, INTERLINKED

An installation that explores the idea of two films conversing with one another.  The Trial and Blade Runner 2049 have many overlapping themes of memory and its ability to manipulate as well as the cruelty of power.

Random lines from each film are selected and displayed in a conversational format allowing the audience to create their own narratives and allow their own memories to alter these stories.

LINEAR CINEMA

A data visualisation of the average colour of each frame in a selected film displayed in a linear format symbolising the method in which these films are created.

Symbolic of time and the reality within the film, questioning how audiences absorb this information. Taking each event throughout a film and displaying them all at once through a series of colours to create a unique timeline of moments.

Created with Processing, Unity3D and Adobe Photoshop

LINEAR CINEMA

VOYAGE

A short film and image series exploring the balance of familiarity and alienness in generated corridors. By collecting a database of science-fiction corridors throughout an array of films I used machine learning to generate new corridors.

Science-fiction focuses on these surreal spaces between our reality and a filmic reality and we experience the voyage which takes place within. These areas are symbolic of portals in a narrative and physical setting which appear familiar and alien all at once.

The means of travel go beyond the physical constraints of our world and our organic dependence.

Created with RunwayML and Adobe After Effects.
