This project has been inspired by Sci-fi films of the 1960s and 1970s (2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, Ikarie Xb-1 and Alphaville), specifically how the directors imagined our engagement with the future would look through our interactions with objects. Inspired by this approach my project aims at investigating how our engagement with nature will look in the future. The initial research for the project was undertaken in the ethereal landscapes of Northern Scotland and Norway, my experiences in nature have informed a sensory collection of interior textiles (lamp covers, carpets and wall coverings). The final collection is largely constructed from man-made materials, which replicate natural forms and textures, the components have been connected by linking and tying to allow some flexibility for interaction. The modular aesthetic of my project has been derived from the post-modern design of the films which inspired my initial thought process. Through animation, I have interpreted my experiences digitally and have contextualised my samples through both 3D animation and recordings of physical engagement. This project aims at drawing greater attention to the deterioration of the natural experience which is continually affected by both climate and societal change. My project aims at highlighting the importance of physical engagement for both mental health and reflection.
