HUSS AL-CHOKHDAR (he/him)

HUSS is an Arab artist based between Cairo and Glasgow, working through out mediums to explore personal and cultural themes. His discipline involves experimenting with and combining elements such as installation, sculpture, visuals, and audio, to culminate in immersive performance pieces. Huss uses his work as a performance/visual artist to raise awareness of issues facing the Middle East that lack acknowledgement within western society, including racism, ethnocentrism, Xenophobia, and the stigma Arab communities face regarding mental health. Reflecting on his experience in Scotland and the internal conflict it has created surrounding his identity, Huss is producing work that both immerses and educates the viewers.

“My work is dedicated to the vulnerable, the censored and the silenced.”

BATTLE OF TRANQUILITY (SHORT FILM)

“There are times in your life, times you feel like you are drowning in joyous feelings. And then, there are times in your life, times you feel like you are drowning in deep, dark, hurtful feelings.”

BATTLE OF TRANQUILITY

This piece contrasts chaos with beauty and shows how in my life, they bizarrely blend in - not in a happy way, but it is the case of having no choice but to adapt to a situation. This piece is about the constant battle with myself, my identity and my relationship with the people and places around me. The last four months home felt tranquil, I finally found beauty in all this chaos. IN COLLABORATION WITH EGYPTIAN PHOTOGRAPHER SALMA OLAMA Music by Abul Mogard

BATTLE OF TRANQUILITY PERFORMANCE

15 minute performance rendition of ‘BATTLE OF TRANQUILITY’  performed four times at The Briggait to a live audience as the short film played. The installation/set is an 8FT cage inspired by the architecture that surrounds me back home – with a twist.

The performance consists of the very conflicted relationships of two masked vulnerable people that go from love and affection to aggression, insecurity and self hatred. It is a symbol of alienation/isolation.
