Material Matters

Material Matters explores methods of material manipulation using salvaged and unconventional materials.

SLICE / WARP / CONDENSE / GATHER / REPEAT

The project is inspired by Bauhaus weaver Anni Alber’s drawing plans. In particular, I researched the condensation of line and pattern by grids using photographic set ups and recording the built environment. I began to condense and abstract these images with my drawings, which evolved to small 3D paper forms. These forms were also inspired by the use of salvaged material, creating with whatever I had to hand. As the project progressed, I began making my own patterned material by applying vinyl freehand and using electrical tape. These materials were then transformed by slashing, pleating and gathering to innovate new surfaces.

The final samples are a collection of explorations in unconventional woven and embroidered textiles for an interiors context.
